Seven scientists, research assistants and teaching assistants at the University of Rijeka have won the University of Rijeka Foundation award for the previous academic year. The awards were handed to them at a ceremony on Friday, January 15th, at the University of Rijeka Rectorate.

The awards are assigned to the most deserving scientists, artists and teaching assistants who have contributed with their excellence to the academic and wider community.

Award-winning research and teaching assistants received the amount of 6000 Croatian kuna (gross), and one of them is Tihana

Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka celebrated six decades of its existence. In this period, Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka left its mark not only in Croatian science, but also on the global level. Team of scientists employed at this Faculty are all representatives of scientific excellence recognized at the international level.

Prof. Dr. Stipan Jonjic points out that the 60th anniversary of the Institution is very important for him, especially when taking into account that he is employed at the University for nearly 40 years.

Prof. Dr. Stipan Jonjic said

Tihana Trsan, a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Proteomics, received the University of Rijeka Foundation Annual Award for the best young researcher in biomedical and biotechnical sciences.

Prof. dr. Stipan Jonjic received several invitations for memberships.

Professor Jonjic recently joined the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM), as well as the Scientific Advisory Board of the Heinrich Pette Institute, which is an Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI).

Prof. dr. Stipan Jonjic, one of the leading scientists in the field of viral immunology,  participated at the Science Festival in Sinj, Croatia, where he gave lecture titled:
“Vaccines today – can we use viruses to work for us?”

Dr. Vanda Juranić Lisnić and Karmela Miklić participated at the 7th EuroMAbNet annual meeting, on 24th and 25th September 2015 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, organised by Blood Transfusion Centre of Slovenia. Dr. Vanda Juranić Lisnić had an oral presentation entitled „Novel proteins of murine cytomegalovirus“.

On 1st September 2015, Dr. Vanda Juranić Lisnić gave a lecture “Antibodies – from accidental discovery to the smart medicines” at the event “Baltazar at the Castle”. The event was organized by University of Rijeka at Trsat Castle in frame of the manifestation “Summer at Trsat Castle”, with the aim of presenting science and scientific research to the wider non-scientific audience.

The network for training in the field of rational designing a new generation of defined glycoconjugate-based vaccines – GLYCOVAX is the first project accepted within the framework of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Networks programme Horizon 2020, while its Croatian partner is the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.

GLYCOVAX represents a network for training young scientists striving to learn how to rationally design a new generation of defined and innovative glycoconjugate-based vaccines, with the aim of improving existent preventive treatments as well as solving thus far unfulfilled medical necessities.

By merging

Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka recently has been recently enriched with the Center of Excellence for Viral Immunology and Vaccines. The center of excellence is engaged in research of  interrelationship between viruses and the immune system, as well as the design of the vaccines and vectors for the prevention and treatment of various infectious diseases and tumors.

The Head of the Centre is Prof. Stipan Jonjic, M.D., Ph.D., Head of the Department of Histology and Embryology, and Head of the Centre for Proteomics at the University of Rijeka Faculty of Medicine.

On 24th October 2014, “Science after dark“ open day was held in caffe bar Tor, Rijeka, where Dr. Berislav Lisnić, Dr. Vanda Juranić Lisnić and Prof. Dr. Tihana Lenac Roviš, scientists of the University of Rijeka Faculty of Medicine, gave a short lectures with the aim of emphasizing the importance of science and scientific research for the society. The event is part of the project “Becoming entrepreneurial: Knowledge transfer from the University of Rijeka Faculty of Medicine to the biotechnology business sector”, funded by “Regional Competitiveness” operational programme (RCOP) 2007-2013.
