We would like to invite you to the lecture of Prof. Zvonimir Poljak, Dr. Vet. Med. on the topic:
Machine learning and decision making in preventive medicine: overview and an example
The lecture will be held on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018. at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljević ", Zagreb (hall Falisevac) at 1 pm.
Summary of the lecture:
Methods used to explore observational data and to inform decision-making are typically based on analysis of a limited number of explanatory variables, with a goal to identify risk factors for a typical individual or a group. Such assessment is conducted as a one-time analysis of collected data, with the study results (e.g., odds ratios) as the main outcome of the study. More recently, decision makers in all fields are faced with a large volume of electronic data, obtained from a variety of sources, and which could be generated and become available for analysis with high velocity. Such data could be used for visualization, reporting, or comparison purposes. Nonetheless, these same data could also be used to build models which predict outcome of interest with validated accuracy. In this machine learning approach, the model itself becomes the major outcome of analysis and could ideally be used to predict outcome of interest on a new individual or a group, thereby assisting with decision making. The objective of this presentation is to provide overview of machine learning approaches on an example of leptospirosis in canine populations. In addition, further examples of ongoing research will be provided and discussed.
